The Christchurch Irish Society was established in 1948 to promote Irish culture, to support the Irish community and to strengthen the bonds of friendship between communities. Located at 29 Domain Terrace.

Saturday 17th November: 2.30pm: Gaelic Games Exhibition

The GAA Club is the bedrock of every Irish community and provides an organised structure from which great community spirit is generated. When you are away in big cities, like London, New York, or more likely Christchurch these days, it makes you feel more at home. Chatting to fellas you know, about places you know, makes life a bit easier when you’re away. The importance of GAA clubs, especially to those away from Ireland, is massive.

Come along to our exhibition game, where Canterbury GAA will show you the best of three clubs here in Christchurch. We open our doors to you to show you our beautiful game! Throw in will be 2:30 at 29 Spreydon Domain, beside the Irish Society Hall. Our own little Irish Corner!☘️☘️☘️

Bring the family to this traditional Irish social gathering. We have great musicians waiting to get your feet tapping and moving to the music.

In its most basic form, it simply means a social visit. In contemporary usage, it usually involves playing Gaelic folk music and dancing, either at a house party or a larger concert at a social hall or other community gathering place. The music is cheerful and lively, consisting of jigs, reels, hornpipes, polkas, slip-jigs and waltzes, the basic steps can be learned easily; a short instructional session will be provided for new dancers before the start of the dance itself.

Some of the dances are named after famous regiments, historical battles and events, others after items of daily rural life. The “Gay Gordons”, “Siege of Ennis”, “The Walls of Limerick” and “The Stack of Barley” are popular.

Doors open 3.00pm. Dancing starts at 4.00pm. Come early and get a seat and listen to the musicians get ready for a great couple of hours of dancing
